This post has been a long time coming! We started putting together Olive’s nursery last summer and slowly, over time, it has become my absolute favorite room in the house. There is a sense of calmness I feel when I walk in, it just feels good to me!
Since we didn’t know if we were having a boy or a girl, I tried my best to keep it neutral, which in turn, led to this really cool, unintentional Safari theme.
I got to design this room from scratch (we even put in new hardwood floors, painted the walls and installed thicker trim), so I turned to Pinterest to get my creative juices flowing. There are SO many beautifully designed nurserys out there, it can get overwhelming. But, I knew I wanted something simple, I didn’t want to ‘over decorate,’ and I still wanted the room to look clean and crisp. I’m always drawn to the more earthy tones, so I stuck with the woods, whites, and gold colors, and created a Pinterest board that spoke to that.
My favorite piece of decor in the room is probably these black and white animal prints. I found them on an Etsy shop for so cheap (they have tons to choose from), and I got them framed through Framebridge, the Marin wood frame. Although these frames were expensive, I don’t regret spending the money. It creates a focal point for the room!
It was also really important to me to add a few personal touches. Not everything should be bought brand new!! My rocker shown below was given to me by my mom, it was the same one that I was rocked in as a baby, and I just adore it. It’s actually more comfy than you would think! I’m still searching for the perfect side table to go next to it. Any ideas? I really like this one from Drew Barrymore’s new home decor line at Walmart.
These bookshelves were such a cheap find from IKEA, only $10/each! They’re actually picture ledges that double as bookshelves, and come in wider sizes as well. When planning out the room, I knew this is where I wanted all my pops of color to really show off. Books can be the perfect (and natural) way to add color to any room, without overdoing it.
The white dresser was also painted by my mom (she’s available for hire!), it was actually hers back in the day! She brought it back to life with some paint (Alabaster White) and we installed new knobs to make it look a little more modern (decor tip 101 – an easy way to update a room is to change out the knobs on furniture or doors. It’s such a simple thing you can do to add character!).
I also highly recommend adding storage to your closet if you have the space! One of the best pieces we added to our closet was this 3-drawer chest from IKEA. It gave us more organization for all the random baby products we didn’t know where to put, and allows extra storage for diapers! Notice how I hid our diaper pail in there as well…no one wants to see that!!
I still have a few finishing touches to add, but I know Olive will love this room as much as I do. If you’re in the process of registering for your little one, be sure to check out my top 10 baby registry items here.
