When in Savannah, GA

August 18, 2021

Garin and I recently took a trip to the low country, and loved all the Southern charm of Savannah, Georgia! So much to see and do, plus the mouthwatering cuisine made for a fun weekend getaway that I highly suggest everyone does at least once.

I’m sharing our weekend itinerary…from tours, history and shopping, to the fried green tomatoes, oysters and best cocktails! As well as the things we planned to do before I ended up getting sick. Bummer! We will definitely be coming back for another round in the future.

Airport and Hotel

You’ll fly into the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, which is super easy to navigate and only has one terminal, which allows you extra time getting to and from.

We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn in the historic district, which I highly recommend. You are in the heart of downtown and walking distance to most everything! With it being so close to everything, you’re a block away from the River District, which has the best water views.

The airport has been recently updated, and features an eclectic, industrial vibe that suits the boutique-like area well.

Day 1

We arrived in Savannah at 11:30am, and quickly checked in so we could head out and start exploring. First stop was a bar called Sorry Charlie’s Oyster Bar. I had the best Citrus Paloma I’d ever had! This is also where we learned that they have Happy Hour M-F that includes $1 house oysters, $3 Savannah Beer and $5 bubbles. We both agreed that we needed to come back for that pre-dinner one night. Garin was MOST excited for this. He loves oysters!

Next, we made our way to the The Pirate’s House for lunch. It’s located in one of the oldest buildings in the city, and acquires so much history. Since Savannah was a thriving seaport town, it became an inn for visiting sailors and pirates from the Seven Seas.

You have to order the popular Chatham Artillery Punch. It’s wildly good, but dangerous in terms of alcohol content! I had the Dijon Glazed Salmon & Arugula Salad, and Garin had the Blackened Snapper, which he thought was delicious!!

(P.S. one of the most crucial things about Savannah is that you will need reservations wherever you go. So about 3 weeks out, I had planned most all our meals. Some places won’t take them so they are hit or miss with timing, but the most popular ones are usually packed quick.)

Day 1 continued…

After lunch, we made our way to the Riverwalk, and found another fun bar to hang at. While many of these places had outdoor seating, we went during a heat wave, so the daily average was over 100 degrees every day we were there. Needless to say, we were ok with the air conditioning.

That night we booked a ghost tour through Ghosts and Gravestones. Did you know Savannah is one of America’s most haunted cities?? I would highly recommend going on one of these tours! There were multiple companies that do it, but this was the one that worked best for our timeline, and was cost effective.

We took the night tour, which lasted an hour and 20 minutes. It was cool to learn about all the history of the city, and the legends/stories that have frightened residents for ages. It’s also nice because you get to go into a few different sites versus sitting on the trolley the whole time.

Next up was a late dinner at Cotton & Rye. Best known for their award-winning Crispy Chicken Wings. O.M.Geee, they were amazing, and I’m not even a wing person! The atmosphere was cool and modern. We also shared the Cheeseburger, and it was divine. We ended the night with a glass of wine, and headed back to the hotel.

Day 2

First stop, coffee. We heard from a couple people that Paris Market Cafe was the place to go. Modeled after an actual Paris cafe, the chic and cheerful cafe made you feel like you were in a different world. And the coffee was FAB.

Next up, I had booked us lunch at Vic’s on the River. It’s right on the river, and the views are spectacular. Especially if you see a cargo barge coming in. Placed an Amazon order recently? Yea, that’s probably how it got to the states. I had the Chicken Salad with Naan bread, and it was the perfect lunch combo. Garin enjoyed the Daily Catch Fish Tacos…also great, but a little messy.

This is where I started feeling a little woozy, but tried to keep truckin’. We went to another bar, and chatted it up with some locals to get a few more recommendations. I ended up heading back to the room for a bit to rest, while Garin went out and wandered.

For dinner that night, we went to the 17Hundred90 Club, and we couldn’t say anything bad about this place. Although its the most haunted inn and restaurant in Savannah, eek! There are at least three ghosts which are believed to inhabit the inn. And guests still experience strange happenings to this day.

The Key Lime Pie shots were to die for, and were entirely too good to be true. They really tasted like the real thing! Same with the Key Lime Pie Martini and actual pie. (I didn’t drink this night, but I took Garin’s word for it.) As for dinner, we both ordered the Boursin Chicken. Literally one of the best meals we’ve ever had. I even saved some to bring home for the next day. Little did I know how my day would unfold.

That night I got really ill.

Day 3

Not much to report here. I spent most of the day in bed, while Garin went out and galavanted. I tried to muster up the energy to meet him at the much anticipated Sorry Charlie’s Oyster Bar for happy hour, but lasted about 30 min before I had to go home again. Back to bed I went.

That night we had reservations at The Olde Pink House, one of the most popular tourist restaurants, and extremely hard to get a spot at. Our reservations weren’t even until 10:30pm at night!!! We decided to forgo them, and I went to bed early. Poor Garin!

Day 4 – the day we left

I was feeling better when we woke up that morning, which was good because I was so worried about getting on a plane when I wasn’t feeling well.

We packed up and made our way over to Black Rifle Coffee Company. P.S. if you have never heard of this brand, you gotta look it up. The story behind how this veteran-owned company came to be, and the mission they provide is remarkable! I had the Horchata Iced Latte, and it was so good!!

Next, we did a little shopping. Garin and I both wanted to grab a Savannah t-shirt or sweatshirt. We also made sure to pop into The Black Dog store, because they are few and far between, and we LOVE their stuff. Because, well, our black lab, Tuck. We grabbed Garin a couple things and Griffin a sweatshirt.

Then, it was time to head out. Sad, that I missed a day and a half of activities, but would go back in a heartbeat!
