To You On Your Wedding Day

May 9, 2017

Nothing is better than being asked to be a bridesmaid in your best friend’s wedding. If you’ve done it before, then you know how rewarding, FUN and completely emotional it is (or maybe that’s just me?) Nevertheless, it’s not only a day to celebrate her and her man, but it’s also a day to celebrate your forever friendship.

And if being asked to stand by her side isn’t enough, what’s even better is being asked to help plan and execute the best day of her life. For that means she completely trusts you…how awesome is that?!

Lauren came to me about a year in advance asking if I would design her save the dates, wedding invites and other printed material. I was elated and obliged. But nerves immediately shot through me. I’d done this time and time again, but there was something about doing it for someone you love that had me weak at the knees! At the time I wasn’t sure if it meant I didn’t want to do it, or simply because I was SO nervous. But now I know, it was because I knew how much this day would mean to her, and I couldn’t help but feel that I couldn’t possibly design them to be as perfect, as she deserved them to be.

Nonetheless, I put my woes aside and got to work. As a designer, I find that the invitation itself sets the (pre)mood for the entire event. Getting it just right plays a large part in setting the scene. Once I’ve spoken with the client and got an idea of their wants and needs, I start researching and sketching. This is when the magic happens. Honestly though, half the time, I don’t even remember how I get to where I finish-haha! A typical project has around 4-8 “do-overs.” Let me tell you, a lot happens in your head when you walk away from what you thought was a good concept, then come back to it, then walk away again. Rather, let me break down my creative process for you:

  1. This is awesome
  2. This is tricky
  3. This is crap
  4. I am crap
  5. This might be OK
  6. This is awesome

And that is why I love this job! 🙂 The work is never the same, and the challenges are always there. But, the feeling people get when they see the work is the best part of all. Especially with wedding invites.

In the end, Lauren and Andrew’s wedding invites turned out absolutely beautiful. It was such an experience I’ll always treasure <3
