    Laura’s Functional Closet Reveal

    May 10, 2018

It’s been a couple years in the making, but I’m excited to finally share my master closet reveal with you all! So when I say it’s been in the making, I mean, we’ve been planning to do it since we moved into the house. But, with all the other expenses, and decorating we wanted to do, we naturally put it on hold.

Since then, Garin and I have been sharing a closet, which is just fine! However, we have this huge room off the bathroom that had nothing in it. It was a great space that needed to be utilized. Easier said then done, right? Omg, I was absolutely clueless as to how much closets cost. Sure, we could have easily put in the metal and plastic shelves, but the space was so large, it didn’t seem to make sense. And we wanted to add value to the home too.

Garin got a quote for the entire space when we moved in. He thought it would be fun to surprise me with for my 30th birthday. We both laughed when he told me how much it would cost. There was no way we could afford it. We were originally quoted almost $10K. Crazy right? I thought so too until we learned that people spend this and more (up to $150K) on closets all the time. That’s the price of a house!!! My anxiety levels spike every time I think about that. Woof!

Anyways, time went on, and I decided that I did not need that whole space to be a closet. I didn’t have nearly enough clothes to fill it! Although, Garin would beg to differ-ha! Therefore, I came up with the idea to make one half my closet, and the other half my home office. This would house all my Stella & Dot jewelry, and make for a cute place to display it! P.S. Stay tuned for another reveal in the near future 🙂

    The process

Clear the space! Haha, I can’t tell you how much junk I accumulated in this room while it was empty. It just seemed easiest to throw everything in there…all the time.

Figure out what I wanted. This was probably the hardest part. Since I wasn’t working with the most organized space to begin with, (see below-so embarrassing!!) I didn’t understand how much room I actually needed. In my defense though, this was partially Garin’s mess too! This is when I brought in the reinforcements. Enter Closet Organizing Systems. They were a referred to us by a friend, and came highly recommended. The gentleman I worked with, named Rich, came to my home within a week of calling them up to take measurements and talk shop.

Envision it. Beforehand, I had mocked it up on the wall using painters tape. Side note, I use this stuff for everything. Anytime I want to see how something looks, I whip it out! Plus, it never leaves marks, so that’s a plus. This was no exception. Rich and I went over it while he was here, and he changed a few things to make sense visually, and for the space, as well as my clothing items.

I didn’t think I needed drawers, but he made a good point when I told him Garin and I were sharing the dresser in the bedroom. He told me that all my stuff should be in one place, so we added them in. The large built in with the drawers and shelves hidden by doors is probably my favorite. It’s the first thing you see when you walk in the room, and they can be easily shut in case they aren’t always looking the tidiest inside, hehe!

Schedule it & prep. Pick a date and get it set up. We had to make sure the room was painted (and dry) along with vacuumed and clutter free before install. This project took 7 hours to complete. The installer, Dan, was extremely professional and I enjoyed chatting with him. Yea, I’m one of those people that checks in every so often to catch a glimpse. Servicemen probably despise me 😉

    The reveal

I love it! Although, I still feel as if I don’t have enough to fill it!! In due time, I say. Thanks for stopping by! Want to see more home reveals? Visit the DIY section, and Dwell section of the blog. Come back soon!! -Laura xoxo
