Laura’s Journey to Straighter Teeth with SmileDirectClub

    July 18, 2019

I’m exciting to finally be sharing my results and experience with SmileDirectClub. I want to start by saying that I did have braces in the past. I got them in 8th grade (ugh horrible timing), and only had them on for about a year…right before high school came around – thank goodness! Anywho, at the time, my parents had just opted to get my top done. I had a big gap between the 2 front teeth. My lower teeth pretty much looked the same. The teeth were a little jagged, and the one in the middle was completely turned. The dentist at the time told my parents it didn’t need to be fixed because it was purely cosmetic. So they didn’t. And I don’t blame them, it would have been more money, and braces are already EXPENSIVE enough!

So, life went on. I wore my retainer through college and then just stopped. Not sure why? I thought things looked good, so why not? BAD IDEA. Pro tip: NEVER stop wearing your retainer. Ever ever.

So here I was…age 31 feeling like my teeth had totally shifted, and they had. I did not want braces again. I had been there done that. So my second option was to look into Invisalign. Also SUPER expensive. My dentist quoted me $5K. What?!? I didn’t want straighter teeth thaaat bad. I had been seeing some marketing going around about SmileDirectClub. My sister, Kara, actually got them first, and liked the changes she was seeing. So, I jumped on board. This was May 2018.

    Getting Started

Signing up was easy. I received a $100 off coupon (which I’m also sharing with you here) and ordered a molding kit to get started. Now looking back, I would highly suggest going to one of their clinics instead to have them scan your teeth. The molds can easily be done wrong. I had to do mine twice. So, another pro tip: find a location and go there. The closest one to me was 45 min away, but worth it to get it just right!

Once they have your mouth scanned, you will get a treatment plan emailed to you saying how long it will take (most plans take 6 months or less) and will show you the transformation of your smile as the months progress. That was cool to see, and made me more excited!

Once you accept the plan, you can make a one time payment or set up a payment plan. The cost for SmileDirectClub was only $1.7K. While that is still a lot, it was so much cheaper than Invisalign, which is why I went this route. I did a payment plan, which comes out to approximately $75 a month. Once ordered, the aligners take about 3 weeks to ship to you.

    The Process

The aligners are meant to be worn 24/7. Except when you are eating and drinking something other than water. This was definitely hard at first. It also requires a lot of teeth brushing throughout the day. They advise to brush after everything you eat before putting the aligners back in. While that may sound excessive, honestly, after a month, I was so used to it.

For me, the plan was to wear them for 5 months. At my 5 month checkup, I decided I wasn’t fully satisfied, and they weren’t quite there yet, so I added on 2 more months. The REALLY nice part is, your plan can be drawn out as long as you’d like, and it won’t cost you more money. The fee you commit to paying in the beginning is all you pay.

    The Results

Once you’ve established your desired results, they send you a retainer to wear everyday for 2 weeks just as before. But when that is up, you only have to wear it at night. I’m so happy with how the results ended up! I’m more confident with my smile, and I’m definitely not letting it go this time. That means wearing my retainer for the rest of my life-ha! Check out my new smile 🙂
